Frequently Asked Questions
What does a podiatrist do?
Podiatrists are healthcare professionals specialising in the assessment, treatment and prevention of conditions affecting the feet and lower limbs. At Coast Sport, our podiatrists work with athletes, active individuals, children and the general community to help manage pain, injuries, foot health and movement-related concerns.
What can a podiatrist treat?
Podiatrists can assess and manage a wide range of foot and lower limb conditions, including sports injuries, ankle and foot pain, plantar heel pain, Achilles pain, forefoot injuries, bone stress injuries, ingrown toenails, corns and calluses, diabetic foot concerns and children’s foot and lower limb conditions.
When should I see a podiatrist?
You may benefit from seeing a podiatrist if you have persistent foot or ankle pain, difficulty walking or running, a sports-related injury, recurring lower limb problems, nail or skin concerns, diabetes-related foot concerns, or questions about footwear, orthoses or your child’s foot development.
What happens during a first podiatry appointment?
Your initial appointment typically involves a detailed history and comprehensive assessment of your feet and lower limbs. Depending on your presentation, this may include a musculoskeletal and biomechanical assessment, gait or running assessment and discussion of your footwear.
Your podiatrist will then explain the findings and develop a personalised management plan based on your goals and needs.
How long does podiatry treatment take?
Treatment time varies depending on the condition, its severity and your individual goals. Some problems may require only a few appointments, while chronic or more complex conditions may require ongoing management.
Our new patient assessments are 45 minutes, allowing time for a thorough assessment and the development of a personalised management plan.
Do podiatrists perform surgery?
Most podiatry treatment is non-surgical. Where appropriate, podiatrists can perform minor procedures, including partial or total nail avulsions for certain chronic or recurrent ingrown or problematic nails.
If a condition requires treatment outside the scope of podiatry, your podiatrist will discuss the appropriate referral options with you.
Are podiatry appointments covered by private health insurance?
Many private health insurance policies provide cover for podiatry. Your level of cover will depend on your individual policy and insurer. We recommend checking with your health fund before your appointment to confirm your level of cover.
Do I need a referral to see a podiatrist?
In most cases, you can book directly with a podiatrist without a referral. If you are being referred by another healthcare professional or are accessing podiatry as part of a specific treatment plan, we can work with your referring practitioner as required.
Can a podiatrist help with running injuries?
Yes. Sports podiatrists assess and manage a wide range of running-related injuries and can look at how your feet, lower limbs and body move during running.
A running assessment may incorporate treadmill or field-based analysis, musculoskeletal assessment, footwear assessment and other relevant factors to help guide your treatment and return to running.
Can a podiatrist help me choose running shoes?
Yes. Footwear can be an important part of injury management, comfort and performance. Our podiatrists can provide personalised footwear advice based on your foot type, running style, injury history, biomechanics, activity and individual requirements.
Do I need custom orthotics?
Not everyone needs custom orthotics. Orthoses are prescribed when they are considered appropriate for your individual presentation and goals.
Our podiatrists assess your feet, lower limbs, biomechanics, activity and footwear before determining whether orthoses may be beneficial.
Can children see a podiatrist?
Yes. Children can benefit from podiatry assessment for a range of foot and lower limb concerns. This may include gait concerns, sports injuries, biomechanical issues and growing-related conditions such as Sever’s disease.
Where can I see a Coast Sport podiatrist?
Our podiatry services are available at our Erina and Tuggerah clinics on the Central Coast.
If you’re unsure whether podiatry is appropriate for your problem, our team can help determine the most suitable assessment or service for your needs.
Is a Podiatrist a Doctor?
While podiatrists are healthcare professionals specialising in foot and ankle health, they are not medical doctors. We complete specific postgraduate training focused exclusively on foot and lower limb care.
How Much Does It Cost?
Prices vary based on treatment type. We recommend calling our clinic for a precise quote or checking with your health insurance provider.
