Every day, feet are secured into shoes with a good set of shoe laces as Central Coast runners go out for a trot.
Matt Shanahan, Coast Sport’s Podiatrist has prepared a video showing us easy way to ensure our shoes are tied up correctly.
One reason to make sure we are tying up your shoe laces correctly is obvious! No one wants to trip while stepping on an accidently undone shoelace while going out for our morning run!
Other reasons for correct shoe lace use has been suggested in a study from the Journal of Sports Sciences in 2011. Researchers found that compared to elastic shoe covers, shoelaces provided:
- Greater perceived comfort
- A decrease in maximum pronation and plantar pressure
They suggested that “shoelaces can help runners obtain better foot–shoe fit” and therefore may be helpful in controlling the listed factors above and subsequently prevent injuries. (Hong et al, 2011)
So, shoelaces are an important part of a correctly fitting shoe and it’s important to make sure they are tied up correctly!
